Intensive Outpatient Program

Our intensive outpatient program (IOP) is a step down from PHP or it can be a direct step into care from the community as well as an added support to traditional outpatient services. It is designed to help individuals who are either experiencing an increase in distressing symptoms and behaviors or for those who are not progressing in traditional outpatient services. Similar to PHP, IOP is a group therapy-based program that also incorporates individual and family therapy when clinically indicated. Programming is still evidence-based, structured, and intensive, but differs from PHP primarily in frequency and duration. Clients attend programming anywhere from three to five days per week for a minimum of three hours each day.

The comprehensive programming and added support foster meaningful improvement and creates a solid foundation before transitioning to community providers. In cases where an IOP client does not already have established community providers such as a therapist and psychiatrist, our treatment team will help to coordinate referrals and an aftercare plan that promotes ongoing recovery and maintenance of progress. Our IOP allows for treatment flexibility around class schedules, work or other obligations.

Day Virtual/Telehealth Intensive Outpatient Program

This convenient and COVID-safe treatment option mirrors the experience and support of our in-person client visit. This option provides all the benefits of IOP services while allowing participants to access care from the comfort, safety, and convenience of their own homes or other community locations. A detailed orientation and guidance for virtual programming participation are provided to all clients during admission to the MHIOP program.

Evening Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program

Evening programming is ideal for those that are working, in school, or unable to travel or attend treatment during the day. Online therapy for mental health disorders and eating disorders is proven to be as effective as in-person treatment if you choose the right program with a strong clinical team. Our experienced clinicians in Virginia now offer their impactful virtual intensive outpatient program level of care in the evenings throughout Richmond, Chesterfield, Petersburg, Henrico, Hanover and other neighboring locations.
